The Minneapolis and Pine Island communities are mourning the heartbreaking loss of Mackenzie Markham, who passed away unexpectedly following an accident. Her untimely death has left family members, friends, classmates, colleagues, and all who knew her grieving the loss of a remarkable young woman whose kindness, ambition, and genuine care for others touched countless lives.

Originally from Pine Island, Minnesota, Mackenzie built a life centered on learning, personal growth, and helping others succeed. She most recently served as an Associate Human Resources Business Partner at UNFI, a position she began in May 2026 after previously working at Orion Associates. Earlier in her professional journey, she gained valuable experience as a Human Resources Intern at Crown Cork & Seal, where she developed the skills and passion that would shape her promising career in human resources.

Mackenzie was deeply committed to education and lifelong learning. She earned her undergraduate degree from Minnesota State University, Mankato, graduating with the Class of 2024 before continuing her studies at St. Cloud State University. There, she pursued a Master of Science in Industrial-Organizational Psychology and was a member of the Class of 2026. Her academic accomplishments reflected both her intelligence and her desire to make workplaces healthier, more supportive, and more effective for everyone.

Beyond her professional and academic achievements, Mackenzie was known for her warm heart and unwavering devotion to those she loved. Since 2025, she had been in a loving relationship with Jess-Alec Burakeye, sharing dreams for the future and creating cherished memories together. Those closest to her remember her infectious smile, encouraging spirit, and ability to make others feel seen, valued, and appreciated.

As news of her passing spread, an outpouring of love and support emerged from the community. Tracey Diderrich, Katie’s supervisor and co-worker, shared a heartfelt message explaining that Katie, a dedicated nurse and respected member of her healthcare team, is now facing the unimaginable loss of her oldest daughter. In addition to overwhelming grief, the family is confronted with unexpected funeral expenses, prompting the creation of a fundraiser to help ease the financial burden during this difficult time. Friends, colleagues, and community members have been encouraged to contribute in honor of Mackenzie’s life and to surround her family with compassion and support.
